For a time I was immersed in all things Cuban. I studied everything I could about it from the music to the dance, the Santeria, the language, the revolution, Batista, Che and Fidel and the riddled history of this romantic island. Though I had been there many times it wasn't until I visited the capital city of Havana that I was struck by its arrested past. American vintage cars have become quintessentially Cuban. Like art, they have morphed into their own genre due to the creative ingenuity of mechanics determined to keep them running. On the malecón, the historical Hotel Nacional with peacock and guinea fowl roaming its manicured grounds takes me back in time. A time before the revolution when Havana was a sultry and exotic playground for scions, wealthy bohemians and mobsters. I could almost hear the chatter in the grand foyer and the sounds of Cuban boleros emanating from the ballroom.

On my bucket list was a visit to the infamous El Bodeguita Del Medio. A Cuban bar that once served up mojitos to the likes of Pablo Neruda, Nat King Cole and Ernest Hemmingway. It remains a popular place but mostly by tourists like me curious to explore the graffiti that still mars its walls —a montage of what remains of its loyal patrons. Many years later, I made a return visit to Havana and the Bodeguita. Just outside the bar, I encountered this iconic Cuban gentleman preparing to enjoy an iconically Cuban cigar. I watched as he bit the head and toasted the foot before lighting it with a wooden match. He looks up at me and I take his picture. The cigar smells sweet, like nuts and wet earth and in his expression I am reminded of Cuba's past once again.
